Making the Best Start this September: Strengthening Phonics, Early Reading and Early Writing
A new school year brings a valuable opportunity to strengthen early literacy. Daily phonics, rich reading experiences and purposeful early writing all help children build the foundations they need for long‑term success. When schools and families work together, children develop the language, reading and writing skills that prepare them for Year 1 and support the national ambition for every child to get the best start in life.
As part of your half‑termly support, you’ll find this blog and checklist designed to help you focus on the key elements that make the biggest difference. We’re here for you throughout the term—ready to support your questions, coaching needs and intervention planning, even between Literacy Specialist visits.
Making the Best Start This September: Strengthening Phonics, Early Reading and Early Writing
September offers a fresh chance to build strong foundations for every child. With the national ambition for 75% of children to reach a Good Level of Development by 2028, early communication, language and literacy remain central to school readiness. Government strategy and Ofsted’s Strong Foundations report both highlight the impact of high-quality early education and strong early literacy teaching on long-term success.
Strong Phonics Teaching
Daily, systematic phonics from the start of Reception helps children hear, identify and manipulate sounds with confidence. Consistent routines, precise modelling and regular practice in blending and segmenting underpin early reading success and are closely linked to later attainment.
Creating Readers from Day One
Rich reading experiences are essential. Daily read-aloud sessions build vocabulary, comprehension and a love of books. Carefully chosen texts spark curiosity, deepen understanding and create a classroom culture where reading is valued and enjoyed.
Developing Early Writers
Writing begins through talk, storytelling, role play and mark-making. As children’s phonics knowledge grows, they apply sounds to their own writing. Valuing all attempts and offering meaningful opportunities helps children see themselves as capable writers from the start.
Working Together
Strong outcomes rely on partnership. When families share stories, talk together and celebrate early attempts at reading and writing, children benefit from consistent support across home and school.
Looking Ahead
By prioritising high-quality phonics, nurturing a love of reading and providing purposeful writing opportunities, we give every child the strongest start. These foundations help children enter Year 1 ready to succeed and support the wider ambition that every child gets the best start in life.
