Hub Lead

Emma Woodward

Emma has worked across Early Years and Key Stage 1 since 2010 and joined the Whiteknights English Hub as a Literacy Specialist in 2019. Prior to becoming English Hub Lead, she led Early Years and specialised in the implementation of Floppy's Phonics at a local primary school.

Emma has extensive experience supporting schools to improve early reading, language and literacy, and has worked with a wide range of schools to develop effective phonics teaching, early language provision and reading practice.

As English Hub Lead, Emma:

  • Leads the strategic development of Whiteknights English Hub across Reception, Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3.
  • Coordinates the work of Literacy Specialists and Early Language and Literacy Specialists, ensuring schools receive high-quality, tailored support.
  • Delivers professional development events and training for headteachers, senior leaders, teachers and support staff.
  • Undertakes phonics, early reading and early language audits to help schools evaluate and strengthen their provision.
  • Delivers the Supporting Early Language Development and Nurturing Language and Literacy programmes, helping schools build strong foundations for reading success.

Poonam Kaur

Poonam is the English Hub Administrator at Whiteknights English Hub and plays a key role in coordinating the Hub's day-to-day operations and supporting schools to access our programmes and services.

Poonam is responsible for ensuring the smooth delivery of the Hub's activities and provides administrative support across all areas of our work.

She will:

  • Coordinate the administration and delivery of English Hub activities.
  • Manage bookings and registrations for training events and professional development programmes.
  • Support schools with funding applications and financial enquiries.
  • Respond to general enquiries and provide guidance on the Hub's programmes and support.
  • Work closely with the English Hub team to ensure schools receive timely, efficient and high-quality service.
Jos Margerison
Senior Literacy Specialist

Jos Margerison

Jos joined Whiteknights English Hub in 2020, bringing extensive experience across both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Prior to joining the Hub, she spent over 10 years as a Senior Leader in schools in Surrey, where she led reading across two schools within a multi-academy trust.

Jos is passionate about developing high-quality reading provision and works closely with schools to strengthen phonics, early reading and whole-school reading practice.

Jos will:

  • Deliver showcase events for headteachers, Key Stage 1 teachers and reading leaders.
  • Complete phonics and early reading audits to support school improvement.
  • Provide intensive, tailored support to schools to strengthen phonics and reading provision.
  • Deliver the Transforming Schools' Reading Culture programme.
  • Support schools in developing effective whole-school reading provision across Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3.
Our Local Strategic Board

The Whiteknights English Hub Strategic Board provides governance, challenge and strategic guidance to support the Hub's work and ensure it delivers high-quality, impactful support for schools.

The Board will:

  • Provide independent scrutiny to ensure the English Hub operates with transparency and accountability.
  • Offer strategic advice and guidance, drawing on members' specialist expertise and knowledge of the local education landscape.
  • Review the Hub's progress against its annual objectives and priorities, ensuring its work continues to meet the needs of schools.
  • Monitor expenditure against the annual budget, identifying emerging risks and supporting effective financial governance.
  • Support the continued development and strategic direction of the English Hub to maximise its impact on improving reading, language and literacy outcomes.

Our Literacy Specialists

Our experienced team of Literacy Specialists work in partnership with schools to improve the quality of phonics, reading and literacy provision from Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 3.

They will:

  • Complete phonics and reading audits to evaluate current provision and identify priorities for school improvement across Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3.
  • Provide intensive, tailored support to help schools strengthen phonics, early reading and whole-school reading provision.
  • Work alongside school leaders and staff to embed evidence-informed practice and achieve sustainable improvements in reading outcomes for all pupils.

Early Language and Literacy Specialists:

Our experienced team of Early Language and Literacy Specialists work in partnership with schools to strengthen Reception practice and ensure children develop the essential foundations for successful reading, writing and learning.

They will:

  • Complete Early Language and Literacy audits to evaluate current provision and identify priorities for improvement in Reception.
  • Provide intensive, tailored support to help schools strengthen communication and language, early literacy and writing provision.
  • Support practitioners to develop high-quality teaching that promotes children's speaking and listening, vocabulary development and early writing.
  • Help schools create effective learning environments that develop children's gross and fine motor skills, enabling them to become confident and successful writers.
  • Work alongside leaders, teachers and teaching assistants to embed evidence-informed practice and achieve sustained improvements in early language and literacy outcomes.
